LOgan Cohen
Ever since I was young, I knew my purpose was make to a difference in peoples lives by helping them overcome certain obstacles and rough times in their lives. It wasn't until I got to college that I realized the group of people I wanted to help was children. Growing up, I had an after school organization I went to almost every day that I considered my second home. There was all types of activities, caring people, and it was a safe and fun environment. I feel an after school activities center should be offered to children everywhere. The opportunity to expand children's learning outside the classroom is very important in helping them grow and succeed. I want to make a difference in children's lives and help them be the best person they can be.

My college experience and education
My growth as a student and person has changed tremendously since I attended Maharishi University of Management, a college that is structured through Consciousness-Based education. This means that at MUM Transcendental Meditation is part of our daily routine and helps us to relieve stress and go within to find deeper levels of understanding and knowledge. When I first arrived at MUM, I was fresh out of high school and unsure of what I wanted to study and who I was. I began taking my required general education classes and was an undecided major. After completing my required general education classes I decided I would study business at MUM, still unsure of what I might want to do in that field. After a year or so in the business program, and a semester off of school to completely transform myself as a student and person, I decided that studying in the education program would be the best fit for me. Before making that decision I had asked myself what I wanted to do as a career and what would make me feel happy about what I'm doing. It was then I realized I wanted to work with kids and gain the tools to start my own after school program organization to help kids find the career that best suits them and help them succeed.

Consciousness and Wellness: Graduates are able to understand their own lives, the subjects they study, and their world in light of unifying principles.
Reflection: Transcendental Meditation and Consciousness-Based education helped me find myself and further my education. Maharishi's unifying principles have help me relate myself to every bit of knowledge I attain, as well as obtain knowledge on a deeper level of understanding.

Holistic Thinking: Graduates are able to demonstrate significant growth of integrated brain functioning, demonstrate measurable growth in human development, including socio-emotional, moral, and intellectual development, and display habits that support life-long health and wellness
Reflection: The whole purpose of college is to gain more education in a specific field in order to have a career in that job field. There are so many different options in our society for a job and we are meant to narrow our choices down to one that fits us best. When I arrived at MUM, I had no idea what I wanted to study. It took me a couple years of taking all kinds of different courses and deep thought about what I wanted to do for work in order to figure out my calling. I narrowed it down by asking myself what i enjoyed doing and what would make me feel I was making a difference.
Evidence: My senior capstone project shows my passion for kids, as well as the time and work I've put into creating a program to help kids succeed.
Analytical Reasoning: Graduates are able to display competency and comfort in working with numerical data, understand natural phenomena in terms of cause and effect relationships and underlying laws of nature, and understand and apply the process of scientific reasoning including formulating and testing hypotheses
Reflection: The greatest part about the education department at MUM is that we were able to work with the kids at MSAE in a lot of our courses. This allowed us to see and note how the students learn and what we can do as educators to ensure that they learn and grow to their highest potential. Certain beliefs I had about the way students learned and what worked an what didn't changed as I was able to sit in on MSAE classes and report my findings.
Evidence: My weekly reflections during my internship show what I learned about the kids there and how it was different than the expectation I had before attending the internship.
Communication: Graduates are able to listen actively and empathetically, express ideas effectively in spoken, written, and non-verbal communication, and use appropriate technologies and media for sharing ideas
Reflection: After figuring out that I wanted to study education at MUM and work towards developing an after school program organization, I quickly realized that it would take a lot of work and trial and error. The ideas I had for an after school program changed as I began writing a business plan. On my own I discovered things that I didn't think would work like I had thought, but I also discovered better ideas for the program through communication with other students in the education department. After discussing my plan for an after school program with my fellow students, I was introduced to other ways of doing certain things in my program that I had not thought of.
Evidence: My entire after school program design shows how much time and thought I put into creating what i think will be the best fit for students in an after school program.
Creative Problem Solving: Graduates are able to locate, understand, and analyze complex written material, build well-reasoned and supported arguments, develop innovative approaches to problems and issues, and create and appreciate elegant design and expressions of beauty
Reflection: For our senior capstone project I had to develop my entire plan and design for my after school program idea. Part of the assignment was to identify a problem I see in education and what the solution to the problem is. This aspect of the project really got me thinking about what the importance of my after school program is and why there is a need for it.
Evidence: The introduction and rationale part of my final paper for my senior capstone shows how I was able to find the problem in education and how my after school program is the solution.
Collaboration and Leadership: Graduates are able to work effectively in teams to accomplish tasks and envision a challenging goal and motivate and organize others to achieve it
Reflection: I have always believed that group interaction was one of the best ways to learn. As a child I attended group therapy to discuss issues in my life and receive help with those issues. Being able to see that I wasn't alone in the issues I faced, as well as hearing how others handled that issue helped me overcome a lot of challenges I faced as a child.
Evidence: My first class at MUM, Science and Technology of Consciousness, we had to create a final project in groups that showed our understanding of Maharishi's 16 principles and Consciousness-Based Education. The process of creating my project with the collaboration of everyone's idea in my group, resulted in an A+ project and the understanding of how important it is to be able to work with others to reach a certain task.
Local and Global Citizenship: Graduates are able to live and act with integrity and respect within the rich diversity of the world’s cultures, recognize how individual actions affect local and global communities, serve their communities and the world as responsible citizens and work with others to help create an enlightened and sustainable world
Reflection: Since I was a child, I always had a passion for helping others. I always thought of a career as something someone did that they enjoyed and made a difference to others. As I figured out who I was and what I wanted to for a career while at MUM, I began to really think about what people needed help with and how I could help them.
Evidence: I believe my degree from MUM shows that acquired this learning outcome. It shows that I was able to find a field of study that I related to, find where in that field of work I was best fitted for, and that I am committed to starting an after school program that will help students grow and succeed.
